According to Bumbea's family, an Italian man promised Bumbea an opportunity to open a gallery in Japan. Her family wasn't able to call her since October 1978.

Bumbea was forcibly married to James Joseph Dresnok, an American defector, with whom she had two sons. She lived in Pyongyang, teaching foreign language. She died of lung cancer in 1997.
