Report on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances Session: 128 INFORMATION FROM SOURCE Date: 05-Jun-2022 According to the source: Ms. Hye-Hwa Jang (혜화장), a housewife and member of the Korean Socialist Women’s Union, born on 8 April 1959 in Hyesan City, Ryanggang Province (DPRK) was allegedly detained on 10 January 2010 during a night raid along with other people from Hyesan City by agents of the Ministry of State Security. Ms. Jang was held in detention ever since the night raid and she was allegedly tortured, including waterboarding. She was last seen in July 2010. In 2011, a person connected to Ms. Jang was informed that she had been sentenced to five years in prison following a “secret” trial at the Ministry of State Security. In 2013, a source at the Ministry of State Security allegedly revealed that Ms. Jang was being detained at Hwasong (kwanliso), political prison camp No. 16 in North Hamgyong Province, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. After Ms. Jang finished serving her sentence, a person connected to her inquired with the Ministry of State Security as to the date of her release, but the request was dismissed by officials. At the time of the present communication, the fate and whereabouts of Ms. Hye-Hwa Jang remain unknown. 4
