- It is reported that Ms. Kang was a broker who carried foreign currency (United States dollars and Chinese yen) between defectors from North Korea living in China or South Korea and persons residing in North Korea. In April 2012, the agents of 7th Department of the Defence Security Command took Ms. Kang and her family were taken to the 7th Department in Hyesan City, where they were kept in solitary confinement. Although some family members were released after three months, Ms. Kang remained in detention for six months. In May 2014, she was rearrested by the State Security Department in Ryanggang Province while at a relative's house.
